Weather Windows

Yesterday Adagio cruised 98 miles across the Great Bahama Bank from Chub Cay to Bimini. Most of the Bank is remarkably shallow (10 to 15 feet deep), and we could see the sandy ocean floor through the clear turquoise water for much of the way. We rationalized that, even if we sank in the middle of nowhere, Adagio's fly bridge would still be above water and we would survive. Strange what one thinks of in these situations...

Great Bahama Bank

The weather apps and other captains tell us a weather window to Ft. Lauderdale may open up tomorrow between noon and 6 pm and we plan to take it. The winds and waves are forecast a little higher than we'd like but still within our parameters of waves under three feet and winds under 15 mph. If we miss tomorrow's window, it will be another week before another one comes around. Plus, tomorrow's winds will be out of the east which we hope will add some speed to Adagio's leisurely 8.5 mph cruising speed. Musically speaking, we hope she will run at an Allegro or Presto tempo tomorrow instead of Adagio. The crossing spans 57 miles over the Gulf Stream so the trip should take 5 to 6 hours.

With negative Covid test results and Bahamian customs clearance behind us, Captain Charles is cooking steaks to celebrate our last night in the Bahamas. Our Gulf of Mexico crossing now seems like a piece of cake compared to open water crossings in the Bahamas. To be honest, I'm a little apprehensive about tomorrow's crossing and anxious to get it behind us. And we are both looking forward to being back in the Good Ole USA. Prayers for safe passage - for all of us.
