Boating lore says that there are only three kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, those who haven't run aground, and those who lie about it. Today we joined the ranks of those who have run aground - seriously aground. Confusing channel markers as we left Everglades City led us smack dab into an oyster shell reef in 3 feet of water. The crunching sound as we scraped the top of the reef and came to rest was unsettling, to say the least. Apparently the reef was created by the local Caloosa Indians who inhabited the area 10,000 years ago.
Fortunately we have towing insurance with Towboat USA, the Triple A of the boating world. They arrived in a couple of hours, pulled us off the reef, and sent us on our way to a beautiful anchorage at the mouth of the Shark River, about halfway to Marathon Key, the final destination for this segment of our Loop.
