After anchoring off the coast of nearby New Jersey, we cruised under the Verrazzano Bridge into New York Harbor. Thick morning fog and an armada of barges, high-speed ferries, and cruise ships churned the huge harbor like a washing machine, but as we motored north toward the Hudson River, the fog began to lift and New York's familiar skyline and the Statue of Liberty began to emerge through the mist. We tried to imagine how early immigrants must have felt seeing the statue come into view after a long, often perilous voyage with no return. No matter how many times one has seen this monument, it still inspires.
Statue of Liberty

France gave the Statue of Liberty (formally named Liberty Enlightening the World) to the United States in 1886 to celebrate the friendship between our two countries and commemorate the abolition of slavery. To raise money to erect the statue, poet Emma Lazarus penned the sonnet, The New Colussus (1883), which contains the oft-quoted words below:
....Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
Adagio anchored just behind the statue for the night, where we enjoyed a great view of Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Ellis Island as well as the impressive New Jersey skyline, followed by dinner and a beautiful sunset. As if all of this weren't gift enough, just as we were turning in for bed around 10:30, we were treated to a fabulous fireworks display over the harbor. Definitely our favorite anchorage so far!
