Marco Island

Writer: KayKay

Adagio cruised 15 miles south from Naples to Marco Island. Although the voyage was short, the easterly wind came straight across our port side, resulting in some uncomfortable rolling and application of Scopolamine patches. But with Captain Charles at the helm, Adagio managed the waves by tacking into them, and the destination was worth the short discomfort.

Marco is the largest of the 10,000 barrier islands off of Florida's southwestern coast yet it is only 6 miles long by 4 miles wide, according to TripAdvisor. The island features six miles of beautiful beaches and 100 miles of inland waterways and canals within its 24 square miles. Many of the canals run through residential neighborhoods, and it was fun seeing houses with boats docked behind them. We rented bikes for the day which was a great way to see the island as well as good exercise for us.

My only fishing trip ever was on Marco Island off a pier with my college roommate’s grandfather. Sheepshead is what we caught. So glad you are there and learning about old Florida. R Wiggs.
