Because of its proximity to New York City, the lower Hudson River Valley features a diverse spectrum of architecture ranging from the only examples of early Dutch farmhouses in North America to the grand country estates of the Vanderbilts, Roosevelts, and Rockefellers. We visited Kykuit, the home of four generations of Rockefellers, in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Built by John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil, in 1913, the house features stunning gardens, an impressive collection of Asian porcelains and modern art, and panoramic views of the Hudson.

While at Kykuit, the Rockefellers attended the local Union Church, where they funded nine beautiful stained glass windows by Marc Chagall depicting stories from the Bible, as well as a rose window designed by Henri Matisse. The stark simplicity of the small church provided a perfect background for the elaborate, contemporary windows.
