While waiting at the Lock 44 marina to transit the Big Chute Marine Railway, we decided to explore the surrounding area on our e-bikes. A few minutes later, the rusty gears on my bike froze, stopping the bike abruptly and tossing me into the roadway on my left foot. A good Samaritan with a truck took us to the ER in Midland, Ontario, about 30 minutes away, where we experienced Canadian healthcare for the first time. All went well except for the broken foot diagnosis. Luckily it was a minor break and we were able to pay by credit card and leave with only a cast boot.
We debated whether to fly home to convalesce or try to continue the 350-mile voyage across Georgian Bay and the North Chanel to Lake Michigan. We'd like to get as close to the USA as possible before our newest granddaughter is born in Jackson later this month, but I am incapacitated and Charles can't do it alone. Fortunately for us, Jackson friend Haden Hughes, who has handled houseboats much larger than ours on the Ross Barnett Reservoir, came to our rescue on July 14th. Thanks, Haden, for joining us, and thanks to Tish for sharing you!
